Nishkam: Selfless Service

Queen’s Baton Relay & Commonwealth Games participation by GNNSJ

300 people joined together on 28th July 2022 to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay as it travelled through the Nishkam Campus on Soho Road.

As Birmingham welcomed the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – an epic journey across the 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth – the Nishkam Campus and the Soho Road in Handsworth was chosen as one of the final landmarks before it reached Alexander Stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Games.

On its way to Handsworth the baton had travelled via land, air and sea, on a route spanning 4,000 kilometres over a period of 294 days!

The Nishkam Centre welcomed residents, businesses, faith Leaders, local schools, and service providers to unite in welcoming the Baton to Handsworth. The event began at 8.45am, with refreshments and family activities which included: arts and crafts for all ages, ‘Learn to ride’ with Handsworth Community Cycling Club, Children’s motivational t-shirt design, Bouncy Castle, Adult Family Fit Health MOT, refreshments and fresh juice drinks.

Attendees were also able to view the new exhibition dedicated to the industrial and social heritage of Handsworth, the changing landscape of the region, and a future-facing vision connecting the past and present through an innovative Community Archway Project. This exhibition was created in honour of the Commonwealth Games and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
